HE may have an impossibly un-Scottish name but from the second he opens his mouth, there can be no doubt which side of the border Paolo Nutini is from.
Although at a first glance he might appear a little boy band-ish (if you overlook the Davy Crockett hat) in fact he is anything but.

Those who only know the singles may have been expecting an evening of easy pop but what followed was eye-poppingly eclectic.

It was impossible to predict what sound would come next in his 80 minute set, he burst onto stage with the riotous, bouncy Alloway Grove and soon woke the cuddling couples. When High Hopes followed, it brought an almost reggae feel and a voice that made him sound like a whisky-steeped Bob Marley .

B-side Smokey Joe's Rock Cafe brought in a bit of blues while there were flavours of folk, in some of his acoustic numbers.

Later there was swing, country and even a little bit of ska thanks to the brass ensemble.

Pop fans weren't disappointed either, women in the audience screamed when single New Shoes was belted out and sang their hearts out with Candy. Despite there being up to nine musicians on stage at times, they were no match for Nutini's voice. Listening to him it is hard to believe he is 22, Scottish and rather on the slight side.

He brought a fantastic energy and almost caused a riot with the encore hungry audience.

He finished with single Last Request which went down a storm – but in fact there seems to be much more to Paulo Nutini which is well worth
exploring.

Oh yes, we are up to 9 in the band, Tom has now been joined with newbie Ben on the trumpet, who's first show with the guys was last night. Saw him bout 10 times before the gig as well but obviously didn't speak to him.

Phew, glad for this post, I was sitting at 666 posts a second ago...

Wait--I'm confused. Tom's the sound guy? And there's a new band member, officially?

They are often joned by guy Tom in the brass section, not the sound guy one. Small guy, dark hair, glasses. They are now joined by Ben too.

Not sure if these 2 guys are going to be full time Vipers, but Paolo introduced us to Ben last night, and I've seen Tom at every gig I've been to this year, though until last night he was previously on the stage for only 1 or 2 tracks.

Thank you, that makes much more sense now.

So anyway all, my dearest (ever suffering) other half surprised me with our weekend away which included a special gig ticket for me. The whole day (and weekend) was great, I'll do proper review and upload pics (personal and Blackpool CD) tomorrow.

Was great to meet you, especially as I remembered you talking bout going to the gig, so I was thinking of you when I arrived. Can't spot you on the CD, stick your co ordinates on the other thread so I can have a look.

That was my other half's aunt who stays in Blackpool, she'd went to a show with him and the kids while I was at the gig. What was that all about, she got you one, did she forget I was there??? Tsk. ha ha!!! She was so funny too.

Was a great night!!

The show was fantastic, im still on a high because of it!!
