Well, Well, Well,...... I haven't even seen this alert yet..... I was at my sister's cooking a "Thank you for being my sister" dinner... and I got that FABULOUS call from Sharon. (my internet was down when I got home)... I have been dying to post...
So, I got the run down on Telluride... You have to reserve a spot if you stay and you pretty much better count on staying as coming home after a day of festivaling through those mountains, even that time of year, isn't a good idea. Also, Telluride is really high up..... Oprah sold her house in Telluride, because she couldn't breath while she was here.... I myself have only been about 12,500 - 13,000 ft I live at approx, 5500 - 5800, (downtown denver is 5280) My brother in law, (who is a native btw), suggested that if you are coming from sea level, (as most of you way out east will be doing), you need to start aclimating yourself to the altitude. Check with your doctor or possibly, if there is a diving school around, you maybe able to start doing that... We're going to go up to the cont. divide which is over 12,500 ft... I know telluride is a lot higher... even if you don't smoke it's hard to breathe... Thank goodness, I don't do that anymore. Anyway, Telluride, I already knew, is a tiny tiny town... If you don't reserve, then you better reserve a camping spot... such a Paolo thing to do....lol I don't know about all of you but this is a PERFECT spot to start..., (no I'm not just saying that because Kimpy and I are the closest). BUT, because, this is a festival in the MOUNTAINS and those guys have already said how much they LOVE Colorado Mountains!!! Isn't this exciting!!! find me thru..... kat276@msn.com http://www.myspace.com/denverkat276 www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=730539723 http://denverkat276.multiply.com/ |

Keystone, I believe, is between 9,000 and 12,000 feet. How much higher is Telluride, Kat? The elevation in Keystone didn't bother me at all when I was there, but several people at the conference I was attending did have a hard time adjusting. You have to be sure to keep well hydrated. (Hydrated with water, not alcohol.

Yes, keeping hydrated is so very important, but people never do drink enough water while here....I've been here since 2002 and have yet to quench my thirst.....lol
I've googled it, but I'm telling you, I didn't have a problem at 12,500 ft either for a short period of time. Doing a festival on a weekend basis... it may take most people who are not use to altitude changes, it may give those people a hard time. Some people it doesn't bother.....most even really healthy and athletic people have a hard time at telluride. It is suggested that the first day you stay under 7,000 ft., (although I know a lot of people who go straight up, but they are very athletic and are use to altitude changes). When you get above 7000 feet, you should still take it easy. Here is something that I found on the net you may find necessary if you've never been at higher altitudes..... Colorado Altitude and Colorado Elevation The Central Colorado elevation is more than a mile high. Most ski resorts in Colorado are approximately two miles high. High elevation affects your body and influences the weather. It impacts every decision made in planning for a trip: route and clothing chosen, evaluation of fitness and ability, and amount and types of liquid and food consumed. The effects of the Colorado altitude are usually felt immediately upon arriving in the mountains. All excercise is harder at first. Visitors might experience heavy breathing, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, headache, nausea, or insomnia. This is normal. At 9,000 feet, each breath takes in only 70 to 80 percent of the oxygen available at sea level. You can minimize the effects of the high Colorado elevation by drinking lots of water, avoiding alcohol, eating light, high-carbohydrate meals, increasing physical activity gradually, and rest when tired. After about four or five days, most visitors begin to feel better. Water loss occurs rapidly when exercising at high Colorado altitude. Low humidity and direct sun cause perspiration, a potent combination. While exercising, the movement of air over your body is accelerating water loss from skin. If you are thirsty, dehydration has already begun. Drink water or sports drinks before, during and after exercising. Try to consume no less than a pint of liquid per hour while exercising, (or being active). Drink every 15 to 20 minutes even if sensation of thirst is absent. Carry a large water bottle for access to water. Sun With less atmosphere to filter out the sun's harmful rays, mountain travelers are more vulnerable to sunburn. There is five times more ultraviolet light here than at sea level. Apply sunblock lotions or wear protective clothing. The intense sunshine can produce withering heat in open areas. At midday it can sap energy, deliver headaches, and contribute to dehydration. In hot weather, try to get out in the early morning or late afternoon. And drink lots of water to avoid heat stroke and heat exhaustion. SHARONA:
I may be in...not Nicole...she has a 3 yr. old and no sitter, she can only attend local Paolo events. Telluride is a very hard location to get to. You would probably fly into Durango and then drive to Telluride. The road between the two can be brutal if weather conditions are not favorable. I would really like to go, but I also would like to wait and see if Paolo will be performing anywhere else in Colorado...after all...it is one of his favorite states! I lived in Denver for about 12 years before moving east and have never had a problem with altitude sickness, although some do. The important thing is to start drinking a gallon of water everyday a week before you go and continue to drink tons of water once there. I wonder which date Paolo will perform at Telluride? When you consider he may only perform for an hr. and be there maybe 24 hrs....not sure it is worth the expense. Keep in touch if you get serious about traveling to Telluride! |

June is not unusual for snow to still be up there, but the roads should be fine by then.
I'm sure that he'll be playing other places throughout the USA this summer, especially festivals. I know that in ohio at the Buckeye Lake music festival/bluegrass festival, I bet he plays if he's playing the telluride bluegrass festival. I just think that this is going to be a cool place for him to play... Also, some aren't bothered a bit by the altitude, but I know a lot of people who are...even seasoned vets of altitude. Months ago, when he was finishing up the USA tour, Sharon and I were talking and we both agreed that we thought that he was going to shift to a more country style, like Johnny Cash and the other storytelling country singers.... I think that's what I'm most excited about. For those who do plan on going,..... reserve quickly... if not, you'll end up camping even if you don't want to...lol find me thru..... kat276@msn.com http://www.myspace.com/denverkat276 www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=730539723 http://denverkat276.multiply.com/ |

Here is some more info. If you come from Sea Level and have never been this high up.... it can be a problem.... Carlyn is right though.... DRINK LOADS OF WATER!!
Founded in 1875, the Victorian charm of the town is protected as a National Historic Landmark District. The town of Telluride (elevation 8,750') is connected to the modern resort community of Mountain Village (elevation 9,450') via a free commuter gondola. The San Juan Mountains are the highest concentration of 14,000 mountains in the US. Activities in and around Telluride include mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, numerous hot springs, historic ghost towns, and whatever else your sense of adventure shows you. Popular hikes from town are the Bridal Veil Falls - the highest cascade in Colorado - and the 2-mile hike up to Bear Creek Falls. find me thru..... kat276@msn.com http://www.myspace.com/denverkat276 www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=730539723 http://denverkat276.multiply.com/ |
