Sambista, Louise, Schneckie, Scheckies son, my daughter & myself all arrived at Georges square around 8.10pm and already there was quite a crowd so we sharpened our elbows and made our way (politely) as close to the barrier as possible. we were stood 2nd to the barrier. I was quite happy here but a little closer would have been better so the young couple in front of me were trying to take a photo of themselves and I offered to take their photo for them, this gained me a place at the barrier as the young lad stood behind his girlfriend and let me take his space at the front - Result!
We saw Slouch and we exchanged waves then he came down to the barrier to chat, he is doing good & was enjoying his night, he also said there was no police escort last night, they just drove themselves back to Glasgow from Edinburgh The first band on were the winners of the Road to Hogmanay 'The Ray Summers Band' Quite an upbeat band, can really cut it live, not entirely sure about the singers dancing but the guitarist I was stood in front of blew me away, my daughter was also very impressed. The songs were great & the only lyrics I can remember and have been singing ALL night (much to annoyance of the folk around me after the millionth time) is 'boots & cats, boots & cats' Idlewild graced the stage next, Ive always liked Roddy Woomble's voice anyway so they were a hit for me too During the last 2 sets we have had the radio presenters on the stage telling us that we were now 10,000 people and It felt like 9,999 others were pushing forward & just as Paolo was announced a fight broke out behind me which brought the security guards right to my face & I couldnt see the stage, I kept telling the guy he had to move but he said not until the fighting had stopped so i turned to watch the fight instead, some girl had attacked a lad because he wouldnt move out her way, but no-one could move in any direction at all, it was too crushed. I ended up pulling my daughter in front of me then security had to pull her over the barrier, as she went I gave her my mobile phone & told her to phone her dad who was waiting in a quieter area, a little bit later Sambista left too, it was just too crowded and they had 'girls in pink' in front of them who were causing quite a stir but security also moved these girls. Eventually the security moved away from me and I got the best view of the stage. Paolo & the Vipers came onstage around 11.30 & gave us some of the best entertainment I have seen in years, it totally out-shone any gig ive seen him do in the last (almost) 3 years. I bet I say that about all ther gigs Paolo & the Vipers went offstage at 5minutes to midnight then re-joined the rest of the artists onstage at midnight to watch the fireworks, which were actually quite impressive, more impressive than the 'handbags at dawn' routine that stopped me seeing the lads enter the stage. I think i put my camera between the security guards, at least I could try capturing the moment. Alloway Grove started us & Last Request ended the gig, inbetween we had some of the new songs mixed with the old & Down in Mexico. I had moved away from the barrier by the time Paolo started singing this but i stood in front of the big screen to listen in, This is truly (in my opinion) one of the best cover he's ever done. It was a great night. It was an honour to attend Paolo & the Vipers last gig of 2008 & their first gig of 2009. Heres to many more gigs gosh ive got an RSI in my index fingers trying to use a micro keypad This message has been edited. new article!! Exclusive: Paolo Nutini fights to put out a different second album Jan 1 2009 By Beverley Lyons And Laura Sutherland PAOLO Nutini is determined to "stick to his guns" by producing a second album he is happy with and not just a copy of his debut These Streets. The Paisley born singer/songwriter entertained the Hogmanay crowds in Edinburgh and Glasgow last night with tracks from the untitled 2009 record. The 21-year-old star admitted record executives weren't altogether happy with the direction he has decided to take for his follow-up. He said: "It's getting mixed just now. I'm in the process of trying to fight against the changes that certain people want to make. If I was to go into the studio and come out with similar songs, I think that would suit a good few people. "I love the songs on These Streets, but there are some that are too naive for me now. I'm trying to stick to my guns. Even that in itself is a bit of a challenge. "I just want to get it out as soon as possible. I like the songs and I like the way they're put across." Paolo, who took on the producers role during the recording sessions at the Grouse Lodge in Ireland earlier this year, said: "The basic difference from These Streets is that the recording and production are a bit rougher. It has less of a sheen and, musically, it's much more true tome. "The politics of "will that get played on Radio 1" creeps into it. I'm just trying to keep a handle on that. The recording was a totally different experience from the last album, it's more hands on." The singer opened the New Year's celebrations in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens before receiving a police escort to Glasgow's George Square where he played before and after the bells. He said: "They are big prestigious events and it's a special night for me so I will make the most of it. "I was disappointed not to play Edinburgh's Hogmanay in 2006 because of bad weather. "It's good to be part of a street party. It's better if you're on first. You're like the stepping stone on the way to the culmination of somebody's night." Following his Glasgow gig, Paolo partied the night away at a city centre hotel with his family and childhood sweetheart Teri Brogan. He added: "Everybody seems to hear New Year and it opens everybody up. I just like the mood that it gets everybody in. "Maybe if the year wasn't so great for the person it gives them a bit of hope that the next one's going to be better and people celebrate that." |

I beg to differ on that assessment, missus - I loved your review! And what about yourself in that much sought-after, yet-to-be-released tee-shirt?! Woo-Hoo! Such a memorable day/night in Glasgow Town... After a desperately-needed decent sleep I'll be better able to remember things more clearly, I hope... |

Thanks so much Paula for the review and the pics, sorry to hear about your troubles with security guys and the crowd. Your tee-shirt looks cool, but weren't you cold?

A couple caps of Paolo @ Hogmanay:
A sentimental favorite movie of mine is Benny and Joon, starring Johnny Depp. Anybody remember that one? I LOVE this look on Paolo. I hope he keeps it going for the next tour. |
