I hate to say that I hadn't heard any song other than "New Shoes" before the show tonight. I was absolutely floored by the performance. I so very rarely get inspired by musicians anymore and to see a man so young and full of passion is a great sigh of relief...Thank you, Paolo. And thanks for signing my cd, although I might disagree about cheese being a meat. I'm sure you have your reasons...
As for the rest of you lot, the whole set was powerful, dead-on, captivating and chock o'block full of soul. Rockin' guitar, perfect drums and delicious bass. I can't wait to see where this music takes you... All the best to each and every one of you- |

Sounds like an awesome show and you had fun AND got an autograph! Not sure I understand the cheese reference though.....wish he would play a gig here in Maryland!

I guess, the cheese thing has something to do with the fact that he's vegetarian...so cheese might be a replacement (or more a displacement)

I found a great review of this show, I liked reading it very much, it made me smile
Sunday, February 4, 2007 Paolo Nutini went to see Paolo Nutini last night in Boston at the Paradise Club. What an interesting kid. While I find that sometimes, the smaller venues are the best way to see an artist because you can actually see them, I am not a fan of standing around for 4 hours in a mass of people who inevitably smell, behind the really tall dude who can't stand still so I look like a really bad dancer bouncing around behind him. And then there are those people that, even though you are standing 3 inches from the person in front of you, somehow manage to slide in between you so you're practically eating their hair. Then they proceed to bob and weave behind the tall guy so now it's a sea of people bobbing and weaving behind the really tall guy. I love the people that think they are the biggest fan ever and sing at the top of their longs to every song. Because that's what I paid to see, some jackass who can't sing overpowering the fantastic talent on the stage. But whatever! It's all part of the experience. And Paolo Nutini was amazing. He kind of freaked me out at first, though. He came on stage, quite a small Italian lad from Scotland. He grabbed the mic and started singing but he refused to look up. He kind of hunched over and sang to the floor. And at moments, his mouth contorted into shapes and sizes I didn't think possible. But what was clearly evident was his passion for what he was doing, he sang beautifully and emotionally. As the night wore on, he got more comfortable, but he definitely seemed unsure of himself, a 20 year old from Scotland playing a club in Boston. It reminded me of how Jim Morrison started off singing with his back to the audience because of his insecurity. I will say this, when Nutini smiled at the crowd, it just made you want pinch his cheek and tell him how cute he was. The tricky part was when he spoke. Couldn't understand a word he was saying. Now, I've heard Scottish people before and completely understood them. But throw a shy kid on stage with a couple hundred talking people and a crappy sound system, and you've got the makings come complete incoherence. At one point, I looked at one of the people I was with and said, "The next song is called love?" and she looked at me and said, "I heard so many pretty faces." Not even close! He did, at one moment, say that he doesn't talk much because we can't understand a word he says anyway. That was pretty much the only thing I did understand. But experience on the stage comes with time and he'll get there. He was amazing and beautiful and I highly recommend everyone go out and buy his CD. My favorite tracks are Last Request, Jenny Don't Be Hasty and New Shoes. Download it! Posted by Gina at 11:25 AM Link |

Yeah, it made me smile too
Especially at the beginning, where its more about the audience than about Paolo, but I totally feel with that girl! Its what happens at gigs usually, its part of the package And I laughed about the part where she and her friend understood completely different things, thats what happened to me and my friend at his gig too, we heard completely different versions www.konzertmania.de <---pix of Paolo & more + NEW interview with Paolo! I tried to read the comment from Gina, and I just didn't get the same vibe at all. I think, at age 19 (not sure if that is how old he is?) if you can sell out shows all across the world, you've done a heck of a lot more than confuse a few Americans with a Scottish accent. I felt his entire set was strong and the entire night was the high point. I'll agree about the loud people at the venue; people in the states don't show the same respect at performances as audiences do in the UK, for example. I would agree that he didn't talk much and also didn't open his eyes when he sang but did he need to?
As for the cheese comment...If you bought a cd at the show, you got to meet him. Not a bad deal for $18, huh? I did have to wait a while, I must admit. When I finally got my turn, I told him to write whatever he wanted on the cd. He smiled and wrote, "Cheese is a kind of meat. Paolo XX." He looked up at me, smiled and said, "You told me to write anything I wanted!" I feel absolutely ridiculous defending the show, but I've seen dozens of concerts and this one sits at the top of the list now. But if I must be honest, there were an outrageously obnoxious couple of people in the "VIP" section of the show talking (screaming) the entire time. I'm sure they were from radio stations and maybe a few were from labels but honestly, they couldn't have heard one song. One woman (and I use that term loosely) even imitated/mocked Paolo at one point and said, "How can anyone listen to this?" It frightens me that these people are responsible for bringing music to the American masses. Thankfully, a talented soul like Paolo leaked through the pile of "experts" (another loose term) in the "VIP" section and made it to the US. I believe Mrs. Federline needs a new promo team, if any of you very important individuals are reading. Paolo's voice is doing the job just fine without you. |

Wow...this is so nice, you made my day !!!! He can be so cheeky and I'm loving it !!!!!!!!!!! But don't worry about this arrogant behaviour of the "VIP"-people...you'll find them everywhere...I heard such comments at the showcase here in Switzerland, too. I was worried about it and expected to read some bad reviews, but didn't found one. Some critical words about his behaviour, okay, but at least he get's them all with his voice and the intensity of his music. ---------------------------- "Every fear I swallow makes me small, it's not the way it has to be...I have my fears, but they do not have me" Peter Gabriel http://misstrouble.multiply.com/ |

Hiya Crystal & Welcome to the Nutini household
There are some great comments here regarding the shows so far. I love the cheese story and I will carry that one on! Next time I see Paolo i will be asking him about cheese & meat hahaha... Thats a great story! Don't you think Paolo should just record his albums live? Ignorant folk at gig's - MY PET HATE! They tend to spoil it for others around them with their throw away comments while full of alcohol. Go save the world superman and leave the gigs to us Thanks for sharing your reviews Bring back The Humpff Family |

Oh well I dont think Gina's comment was quite an evaluation, more a description of the surroundings, meant more funny than serious. Anyway, its not fair to criticize her cuz she's not here to defeat herself, but whatever
Youre right, that cheese story is hilarious! *wondering why he thought of nothing but cheese and meat www.konzertmania.de <---pix of Paolo & more + NEW interview with Paolo! No, no, no...you don't know me... |
