So, basically Canada Day is the day the Queen said, "Ok Canada, you're officially free of me you except you have to leave my profile on all your currency and let me stay in the best hotels and hunting lodges when I come to visit my former colony."

I'm not sure just how much power the monarch really ever had over here. It was Parliament that was taxing us up to our eyeballs on every piddley-a$$ thing that started the hullaballoo.

Now please explain the whole "Commonwealth" thing to me, because being a part of it just sounds like "more taxes" to me, but maybe those are to pay for the Commonwealth Games, yes?

That's like Jaywalking or something similar where someone asks Americans, "Do they have a 4th of July in England?" and then people say, "No." or "No, we won." or something like that. Wink

The thing that scares me about the stereotypical 'eh' thing, is that in all the time I've spent in Canada, I've never heard an actual Canadian say that! They must say it only when they think Americans aren't listening, eh? Wink

Kat, now you know the IL cops are just confiscating all the fireworks coming in from Indiana and then taking them home for themselves. Wink They HAVE to. I mean how would it look for an IL cop to be caught crossing the border with illegal fireworks?

(And YES I AM too lazy to Google it.) Razzer

Well, Colorado and denver cops have been confiscating as well, It's our neighborhood that they'd be sett'n them off in...lololol

Thanks for the laugh, Bib, from one member of the "giggle factory!" Smiler However, in my neighborhood on the 4th, there were very few pauses of any kind! And M80's galore... After I went to bed, though, I was lucky... No real earth-shattering explosions to wake me up in fear of my life... I woke up once to a somewhat pitiful explosion far-off from here.

Yesterday was quite calm earlier in the day, but around 6pm they started it up again... To my suprise, though, their post 4th of July show was rather weak... Nothing like previous years... I chalk it up to the bad economy. They gave it their all on the 4th, and must have saved just a few over for a feeble follow-up... No complaints about it here... Smiler

I live in what they call a Blue Neighborhood, full of Police, Sheriff, and firemen,.... How do you inforce, when it is them and their families setting it off....lolol

Sometimes it amazes me with what our men in blue can get away with! I've heard some real interesting stories myself... For instance, someone in my extended network, many years ago, had some confiscated fireworks given to him by a friendly neighborhood cop... So it does happen.

Concerning Canadian celebration of Canada Day, here in the Detroit/Windsor area, we join forces and celebrate the International Freedom Festival together. A huge fireworks display is part of that festival and is set off over the Detroit River. "Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario jointly celebrate the multi-day festival the last week of June which draws about 3.5 million visitors in order to commemorate each country's respective National holiday. US Independence Day on July 4 and Canada Day July 1." This event began in 1959.

Here is a short video of the June 23, 2008 Windsor/Detroit Fireworks Finale. They usually always hold this celebration in June, as memory serves me, just short of the 4th of July. I believe they play Canada's anthem and the US anthem in the beginning and display the flags of both countries. This is one of the world's biggest fireworks displays. I've always wanted to go over to the Canadian side to watch, but never have. We usually stay home and watch it on television. Then we visit nearby parks, closer to the fourth, to see fireworks live. Smiler

I hope you enjoy your honeymoon getaway!!! Smiler

I've always wondered why they chose late June for the big event, too!
Seems silly... Confused But I guess they have their reasons... Confused

We have always said "pop," as well. My mom was from East Tennessee, and her family used to call it "dope." But she was embarassed about that when she grew up... Smiler

I grew up calling it pop and not soda, so I don't see how that's a Canadian thing.

Maybe "eh" is more Eastern Canadian than Western. In fact, I never really knew about 'eh' until I was an adult.

Have fun on your romantic trist! Smiler
