What's your job? What's your hobby? How do you spend your time? If you could have any job, what would it be?
Anything job related, hobby related, or just whatever strikes your fancy as something to do, lay it on us.

Me, I'm a writer, artist, cat-herder and checkout girl.
Right now, I'm finishing up the final edit of my book (with a certain set of lyrics included. Squeak), and I happened across a line in one of my chapters that I thought was quite good. I'm my own worst critic when it comes to my writing, so to stumble across something that I really like in my own prose is quite rare. Usually, I look at a paragraph and try to see how I can improve upon it somehow, but this particular phrase made me sit back and say (out loud to an empty room), "Damn, that's good."
Not to blow my own horn, but to enjoy the feeling of a job well done. At least as it relates to that paragraph. As for the rest of it in total, we'll see.
Man, I love my job.

Do you rewrite things you read, as you are reading them, even though they aren't always poorly written, but still could be written better than they are?

Only my own. I'm terrible about thinking that what I've written isn't good enough. At the same time, though, I look at some of the stuff out there on the market and think it's crap by comparison. I don't try to rewrite other people's stuff, I compare it to mine.
On the other hand, when I read something that's really, really good, whether it's a classic or not, I make note of how it was done so I can see if it's something I can weave into my own style somehow. Sometimes I can own it, and sometimes it just doesn't mesh. I don't know if I'd say I'm ripping them off, or if I'm learning how to be a better writer from the pros that are better than me. I think that's how it's done, anyway. Learn from the masters and try to become one.
I know I sound like such an egotist, but I'm really not. I just want to put out the best writing I can. I'm horrified that I'll put it out and everyone who reads it drops it in the nearest dustbin after ten pages saying "That's crap."
For the most part, though, I want to put out writing that most effectively expresses what I'm trying to say. If people like it, great. If they don't, we're just not on the same wavelength. Nothing I can do about that but hope they like the next one.

Wow. It's a good thing I'm a novelist, isn't it? I'm long-winded enough...

Fair enough, but what page is that buried on?
I didn't see it before.
Forgive me. I'll read through thirty or forty pages worth of topics first next time.

I hope you didn't think I was implying anything by posting the link to the other thread. I was merely pointing out that some people had posted what they did for a living somewhere else on the board. I noticed that not too many people had posted in here and then remembered answering this question before. I'm not sure how far back the thread was (I'm sure it was WAY back); I just did a search to find the topic. Sorry, if it came across in a rude way; I didn't mean it to at all.

Buy you a beer? Root beer, iced tea, whatever you're drinking. I hear there's a coffee shop around here somewhere...
