I thought I’d start a Northern Soul thread for our lovely forumers. I’ve been into it for about 25 years.

Plenty on BBC Radio to listen to.

Just go to the BBC Radio website and open up the BBC iPlayer. Just select Blues, Soul, Reggae from the drop down menu and choose one of the below for your listening pleasure.

Northern Soul - The best of Motown and Northern Soul with Mary Fox - BBC Radio Stoke

Northern Soul and Motown - Steve White plays the best in Northern Soul and Motown - BBC Radio Sheffield

Northern Soul - Get the hottest soul sounds around from Motown, 60's & 70's! - BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

We Got Soul - Jon Raitt and Paddy Grady bring you the finest Northern Soul – BBC Radio Northampton

Youth Club Classics with Mary Fox - Upbeat mod-pop and classic Motown – BBC Radio Stoke

Lets keep this thread to Northern Soul chat only. Any other chat use MSN or email.

Enjoy

There's also a show on Smooth FM London on Saturday evenings at 5pm, that's rather good. I do like Mary Fox's show though.

Also, there is a club night that I've yet to go to but apparently is rather good, going on reviews and what I've heard from others.

My dad has always been into it but I've only properly started paying attention to it in the last few years. It's odd how much I already knew without knowing that it fell under the banner of "Northern Soul".

Thanks for opening this thread, I cant believe after all these years I have finally found people to talk to about the music that has been so important in my life (pre hard-fi of course). Being a northern girl originally, I didnt know it was so prevalent in the south.

A lot of us are ex scooter boys / mods so it shouldn't have come as that much of a shock.

Yes you are right Yeti, I should have said still, Quadrophenia is one of my favourite films so I know there was a bg scene in the South I just didnt realise its as big today as it ever was. Unfortnately there doesnt seem to be anywhere in the Woking/Guildford area where I can go and have a really good dance to some great tunes. (or is there?)

TIS would know, we were going to a gig in Guildford a few weeks ago and i couldn't make it.I think the band was called BANG BANG LULU {apparantly they play Northern Soul/Ska etc) but I had never heard of them. The scene used to be MASSIVE in Guildford/Woking (home of the Jam). I'll see if i can find anything out for you as i'm a local boy myself. The Wooden Bridge in Guildford used to have a few nights but that was years ago.

I know Northern Soul sounds like something I'd like but where does Northern fit in. Does it mean North America or Wigan or what?

If you would like to have a taste of Northern Soul go in to youtube there is loads on there having just spent two hours listening to some classic tracks.. Let her go by Otis Smith, Cause your mine by the Vibrations, Stick by me baby by The Salvadors, And my favourite, If its all the same to you babe by Luther Ingram. There is also loads of footage of Wigan and Blackpool and although they are no longer there you will see the fantastic atmosphere they had.
