I don’t know who will read this or indeed if anyone will but I feel as though I should say thankyou to Hard-Fi for the „Polish love song“ song… I don’t know who wrote the song or really anything about it but in that song is so much of my life.
My grandfather fought in the Polish army during the second world war and for his troubles he was awarded a place in Dachau. I thank god every day that he survived and met my grandmother. As the song goes, „Uncle Joe“ then came to power and my grandparents never returned to Poland. After the war, and a number of years in a refuge camp, they eventually migrated to another country outside of Europe. In this country, that I call mine, they and their children were also subjected to a racism that I will never comprehend...
In a strange twist of fate I am now the one living in Poland and everyday, from my bedroom window, I see the monostosity of a „Palace“ that Stalin „gave“ to Warsaw. As I walk along the streets I see the plaques dedicated to, or candles that still burn for those who gave their lives in an attempt to free Warsaw from Nazi occupation… I have no idea where your song came from but I do know that it will be close to the hearts of many people and I know that everytime I hear it I am reminded that I need to do my bit to make the world a batter place – so thankyou, Hard-fi for that.
